For this assignment, I chose to recreate the painting Interrupted Reading, by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, created in 1870 during the Romantic period. In this painting, Corot depicted the melancholy feeling of romanticism with the private image of a woman reading, which was a common subject of the period, but Corot chose to have her looking up from her book.
The most difficult part of recreating this image was the clothing. Because I was unable to go out and find clothing to use in my recreation, I had to look through old clothes to find pieces that would work. For example, you can see that the skirt we ended up using had flowers on it because it was the only one we could find with the correct length and close to the right color. The background was also a challenge, as we don't have any blank walls in our house, so I had to use curtains and put my model and the table in front of it. While posing the model, we realized that the woman in Corot's painting is sitting very slouched, so we had to make a few adjustments to the table to make it the right height for her to lean on. I think my recreation of the painting turned out good because I was able to find props that almost matched the painting and only the colors really need changing.
