My independent project at the end of the first semester was to create illustrations for some poetry I wrote for another class.
Butterflies on a String
The butterflies on a string
hang over my head
trying to fly out the window,
away from my dreams.
Hanging over my head,
flying away from me
and away from my dreams,
leaving me for the sky.
Flying away from me
on painted patterned wings,
leaving me for the sky
and a brighter future.
On painted patterned wings,
they fly out the window
to a brighter future,
the butterflies on a string.
Bamboo
You grow up skinny without trying.
Strong and somewhat flexible.
Roots keep you held down,
Tethering you to the ground.
But you spread your leaves wide,
And let the wind and world teach them to dance.
Sleeping Mountain
The mountainous curves of her hips and chest
Lay under patchwork quilts of green and yellow leaves.
She sleeps for the morning light of spring.
Poetry Illustrations
I use a lot of imagery in my poems inspired by my own experiences and surroundings. I played a lot with the titles of my work, making them the featuring artwork. I have found that my best work seems to be inspired by written words, either in songs or poetry.
Reflections
Butterflies on a String
For this poem, I used line, space, asymmetrical balance, and movement to create my illustration. For the visual, I used the imagery of the butterflies on a string flying out of the window.
Bamboo
The final lines of this poem inspired my illustration the most, showing how the bamboo bends to the side and the leaves wave in the wind as they adapt to the world. In this illustration, I used texture and some balance, but mostly movement to help show the feeling of the poem.
Sleeping Mountain
In this poem, I used a lot of vivid imagery in only a few words, but I knew that I wanted to show the main comparison of a mountain being a sleeping woman. I used line and form together to show her figure, which is done more with line than with value.
